Last week, I had to deal with a major inconvenience. You see, the flushing mechanism in my bathroom stopped working, without a warning. I had just used the bathroom, and then realized that it simply wouldn’t flush. I tried to tinker with the cistern but it soon became clear that my efforts were in futility. I had two options: to either call the landlord (who would then call a plumber to come and repair the thing the next day – at the very earliest), or to call a plumber by myself (which would mean bearing the cost by myself).
I opted to call the landlord. That was after checking my wallet, to find that I had exactly 350 bucks remaining – which would surely not be enough to pay a plumber, and leave me with something to spend till the next payday. And after checking my Capital One Bank account balance online – just to reconfirm what I already knew: that the account had no money.
The landlord was gracious enough to say that he would indeed have a plumber fix the toilet the next day. But then, I had to figure out how to survive that one night: which is how I ended up having to beg to use my (male) neighbor’s bathroom in the middle of the night. I just hope that I didn’t give him the wrong ideas, because he didn’t seem to believe my broken cistern story, and he seemed to think that I was just looking for an ‘excuse’ to be at his place at night. But then again, he is a decent churchgoing fellow, who sings in the choir…
